Calcein and manganese experiments for marking the shell of the common cockle (Cerastoderma edule): tidal rhythm validation of increments formation ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Bellamy, Elise; Lartaud, Franck; De Rafelis, Marc.
This work focuses on investigating the potential of calcein and manganese as growth markers of the common cockle (Cerastoderma edule) in the bay of Somme (France). Recapture of shells, previously marked using a chemical marking and then bred in natural conditions, was performed in order to determine the shell growth patterns. Calcein marking has shown a fluorescent increment in shells after only 30 min immersion time at 150 mg L-1, but also for shells immersed 3 h at 50 mg L-1. Likewise, manganese shell marking was revealed under cathodoluminescence for shells immersed 1 h at 120 mg L-1 as well as for shells which spent 4 h at 90 mg L-1. A numerical analysis performed on each marked cockles has revealed 23 micro-increments between the mark and the ventral...

Dynamique temporelle de la contribution du repeuplement en stades précoces de truite (Salmo Trutta l.) dans la population en place et dans la pêche sur le doubs franco-suisse. ArchiMer
Champigneulle, A.; Degiorgi, F.; Raymond, J. C.; Cachera, S..
The technique of otoliths fluoromarking has been used to evaluate at a large scale the practices of brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) stocking (540 000 - 570 000/year, most of them as sac fry) for three cohorts 1994-95-96 in a part of the River Doubs having a length of 40 km and fragmented in three zones (upstream, median, downstream) by three hydroelectric dams. For each of the three cohorts, there is a rather high contribution (23 to 60% according to the zone) of the stocked fry to the automnal 0+ standing population. The mass marking of all the stocked fry allowed to show that the dynamics of the contribution of the two components of recruitment (natural or stocked) differed. Indeed, the contribution of stocking decreased with time when measured in the...

Electronic individual identification of zebrafish using radio frequency identification (RFID) microtags ArchiMer
Cousin, Xavier; Daouk, Tarek; Pean, Samuel; Lyphout, Laura; Schwartz, Marie-elise; Begout, Marie-laure.
Although individual electronic tagging using passive integrated acoustic (PIT) tags is established, it is mainly for fish >60. mm in length and is unsuitable for fish of <30. mm, like zebrafish. We used radio frequency identification (RFID) microtags (1 mm in diameter and 6 mm in length, with a mass of similar to 10 mg) to individually identify juvenile zebrafish (length 16-42 mm, mass 138-776 mg) for the first time, and studied the effects of intracoelomic implantation on fish survival and microtag loss, growth, spawning and exploratory behaviour. After 5.5 months, both high survival (82%) and low microtag loss (11%) were achieved. The smallest surviving fish weighed 178 mg, and success in microtag reading was 73% for the size class 350-450 mg (26...

Photo-identification as a technique for recognition of individual fish: a test with the freshwater armored catfish Rineloricaria aequalicuspis Reis & Cardoso, 2001 (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Dala-Corte,Renato B.; Moschetta,Júlia B.; Becker,Fernando G..
Abstract Photo-identification allows individual recognition of animal species based on natural marks, being an alternative to other more stressful artificial tagging/marking techniques. An increasing number of studies with different animal groups has shown that photo-identification can successfully be used in several situations, but its feasibility to study freshwater fishes is yet to be explored. We demonstrate the potential use of photo-identification for intraspecific recognition of individuals in the stream-dwelling loricariid Rineloricaria aequalicuspis . We tested photo-identification in laboratory and field conditions based on the interindividual variability in abdominal bony plates. Our test yielded high correct matches in both laboratory (100%)...

THE USE OF VOCALIZATION SIGNALS TO ESTIMATE THE LEVEL OF PAIN IN PIGLETS REA
Cordeiro,Alexandra F. da S.; Nääs,Irenilza de A.; Baracho,Marta dos S.; Jacob,Flávia G.; Moura,Daniella J. de.
ABSTRACT Pain is considered a condition that most affect the welfare of animals and its measurement is seen as a difficult task. This research aimed to determine the level of pain in pigs by their vocalization. It was recorded the vocalizations of 20 male piglets under normal circumstances (I), marking by Australian method (II), tail trimming management (III), and castration (IV). A unidirectional microphone and a digital recorder were used to record the sound signals. The results suggested that Pitch frequency (Hz), the maximum amplitude (Pa), and intensity (dB) increased from pain-free pigs to the marking procedure; and from marking to both tail trimming and castration The tail trimming and castration vocal response did not differ.
